No codes will be shown, codes are only for the engine and transmission.
Cause, as was stated by biggie is most likely wear, however bad u-joints can take out a pinon seal also.
If you have the ability this is not a hard job to do. Remove the drive shaft, yoke (you can barrow the socket and breaker bar from Auto Zone) pop the old seal out and install the new seal. About an hour and half job your first time and should cost you about $60.00 with new fluid and yes remove the dif. cover and change the fluid at the same time.

Note there may be a oversize or "repair seal" available that is .010 smaller on the ID of the seal.
