The nut needs to be marked before removal and then re-installed by screwing it in the EXACT same number of turns and then lining up the markings you made during disassemble. If this isn't done correctly the bearing preload will be altered and it will fail.

Nice write up, and yes you can mark the nut or use a torque wrench with a dial indicator and not the reading you get when the nut yields. Then you set the nut to that setting. There is a crush collar that sets the per load.

Dirtyoil, my money is on pinon seal, but yes the next logical would be axle seal then last cover seal.
