The homemade rack looks good, but I thought the screwed down parts had to be on the top edge of the roof. That is where the reinforcements are located.

Something like this could be done economically and I think wouldn't put too much stress on the roof provided you used plenty of supports to spread out the weight evenly across the roof.
The only thing I would do differently would be to have the 2x4's extend past the sides of the camper roof so the tie down straps wouldn't be rubbing against the sides of the camper.
I would also add a tie down strap to the front/back of the camper as well to minimize movement.
