What trailer can I tow behind a Honda Odyssey?

I realize that this may have been asked a dozen times, or at least something along the "what can I tow behind my mini-van?", but we've got a motorhome, and I'm thinking of looking for a smaller TT (not a P'up, though I might consider a Hybrid, so we'd have the shower and bathroom).

I should also say that we want it to be able to sleep 5-6 people, and preferably have enough headroom for my 6'-7" body to stand and sleep :W

The Odyssey has a towing weight listed at 3500 lbs. What weight TT am I looking for, and do they exist?

The reason I'm even thinking this way, is that I saw a minivan pass me on the interstate a couple of weeks ago, with a good size (in my opinion...maybe 18'?) TT behind it, and they seemed to be traveling without any issues. Yes, they may have been overweight, I have no idea...and I'd guess that they didn't either...LOL!! There was no Equalizer Hitch either, and the van wasn't down at the rear, so I'm guessing that tongue weight wasn't much of an issue either?

I saw a nice trailer online, but it had a "shipping weight" of 4600 lbs.???

Thoughts?

Thanks in advance.

The van is not going to carry 5 people and tow 3500 pounds. Read the owner's manual again where it talks about loading the van and reducing tow capacity.

    Otherwise I recommend a pop-up with 3500 GVWR.
  • for a 3500 lb. rating I would look at Rpods for a hard sided unit. that is the same rating as a Pilot for an RV.
    bumpy
  • Our HTT listed below tips scale at 3,490 loaded and ready to camp. Added air bags in rear springs. Tows great for many years and miles. I do not reccomend exceeding your weight limit. You do have options. Figure 500 pounds for gear
  • Short answer: not much can be towed with an Odyssey. The weak point of these vehicule is the rear suspension, it will sag a lot. The Odyssey is more suited to tow a pop-up trailer. As a Honda technician, most of our customers are towing pop-ups or really small travel trailer, in the 16 foot range. A Pilot or Ridgeline is a better option, the rear suspension is a lot stronger.
  • I would think your options for towing a regular TT with an Oddysey (3,500 lbs) are nearly nill. Even hybrids may be beyond your tow rating.
  • Was it a Chevy, or GMC van. They I believe have Rear Wheel D, and a frame. Could be the difference.
You will need to find a TT in the max 2500lb dry range.
