There have been a lot of weird or interesting places we've overnighted. But, we go looking for the unusual. Just about any sandy spur 2-track leading up to the east side of the Sierra Nevada; or the west side of the Inyos. June 1965 on one of those sandy two-tracks up the East side of the SerNev. in our 1st 4WD. We camped just to the left of this photo.

Here was one in 2001 with my new Dodge 2 series and 3 yr. old Lance: location; a dry lake in Owens Valley where I pulled up in the late afternoon Sierra shade and parked on the soda pan only to be greeted in the morning with bright sun on Mt. Whitney directly over the TC (in the background). It was in early June and there was not a waft of wind to mar the solitude. Why do I think BKA knows this very spot?

200 yards west of Hwy. 95 in Nevada on the way to EXPO2013:

On the volcanic ash on the east flank of Mt. St. Helens on our Western Volcano Tour:

East Side Sierra Nevada after a freak Oct. 6th snowstorm. We camped anyway.

North of Winnemucca NV. at a pass in a wet spring. This is as far as we got:

Oh! Summit just below the 14K foot Engineer Pass in SW Colorado: The Whaz and Sheep Camp were in the other TC's. This was in a narrow weather window in mid September.

A gravel pit just south of Coldfoot AK on the haul road. The Brooks range in the background. These were the cleanest and least buggy of all our camps in AK.

On a tiny little pull out on the Lippencot Lead Mine road in Death Valley: yes, we camped right there. I put a rock in front of the wheel as we were right on the edge. Never saw a soul.

Of course, plenty of rest stops in various parts of the country. You don't want to park next to a refrigerator truck overnight.

I only spent half the night here along the freeway when my flat towed jeep lost an entire wheel when the axle spun a bearing and melted off.

Along the Mojave Road with the Bros:

We over nighted in a couple S.F. Buy area cities next to our kids homes right on the street, but we obviously had permission and there were no CC&R's. We've camped at Casino parking lots. They don't mind you playing a few games of...... Also a myriad of truck stops. It's good to get to your destination while the sun is still up. Many over nights were ill planned because we got there after dark. When the sun comes up you never know what you will find. We have friends who pushed the envelope and pulled down a dirt road at midnight and camped in a rather trashy area. At dawn they discovered they were right in the county landfill! and beat a hasty retreat. We try to avoid getting anywhere after dark now-o-days. If you get stuck having to make a late decision be prepared to make a quick exit in the A.M.
