Stick to under about 6k dry and you should be pleased with how the truck handles. Length is not necessarily important except for the number of camping sites you fit in. Get the right TT first!
Your truck is already 9 years old. How much longer do you plan to keep it vs. the RV? Are you willing to upgrade that first, or shortly after purchasing the RV if you find the performance or comfort unacceptable?
My TT is listed at 5180 pounds dry, 28' box, 32' tongue to rear bumper. I estimate we are in the 6500-7000 pound range depending on how long our trip is. My prior TV was a 2003 F-150 5.4L/3.73 which performed well enough to last us 2 summers. We were prepared to upgrade the truck if needed immediately, but it worked well. The primary motivation for replacing it was going to 3 rows of seats for traveling 3-5 hours with 3 kids in child seats next to each other.
