What's in the space under the step up to the bed in a Lance?

This seems to be largely empty space but I have no idea. The carpeted step is fixed but I'd like to pry it open, and see if I can use this space. Ideally to re-route the battery cables and setup a battery bank (two AGMs) for the 200W solar system I'm building. I know the interior door-facing wall for this space houses the camper's fusebox and carbon monoxide sensor, but has anyone done anything with that space before? Or shall I be the guinea pig (can document)?
  • My 1181 has all the electrical goodies in there (Converter, jack controller etc). It's hinged on mine.
  • We had to find our way into that step-up after our water tank shifted and pushed against the neighbouring inverter/electrical panel, while on a very rough back road that had us bouncing good in 4x4. The inverter/panel were pushed outward about a 1/4" from the cabinet.

Carpenter DH fixed it after I found the screw heads in the carpet and removed the screws. The water tank had pushed itself to the side and twisted a bit. It wasn't attached, just set on the floor, and held in place with the water lines and inverter/electrical panel.

Now it is snug fit in place with custom cut framing.
  • You guys are absolutely right- I just realized there was a vent on that panel and took a peek inside with a flashlight. Wires, hoses and tank! I'll stay out of there and look for a better spot. Thanks again.
  • Water tank, wires, and gas lines. I installed a marine access port in my tank top an can see how much water left in the tank plus makes filling from containers very easy.
  • in my 1055 that space is packed with electrical, not the water tank.
  • yes typically water tank. as noted top generally screwed on, buried in carpet. Not room for much else in the box- though good to access for running wires across camper etc. On ours the gas lines, bundles of 12v & 11Ov wiring crosses thru tank box gas. Any wiring Ive add I used box to cross camper. Some you can access tank fill & drain connections from top-or at least see. Not a lot a structure- frame on ours is a few pine/fir 1x1's-prying would not be advised.

I didnt rescrew ours, used some angle brackets on wall-top slips under and used screw hook & eyes to hold front. But I added an access port in tank so wanted easier access for refilling tank on occasion.
  • In mine it is the water tank. The cover is 3/4" plywood covered with carpet and then screwed on with drywall screws (6 I think). I found the screw heads with a magnet and unscrewed them. If you try to pry it open, you may make a mess of it.
  • That makes sense- I'll bet you're right.

If so, I may need to sacrifice a lower cabinet somewhere.
  • I think my water tank is in that area. At least it sounds like when I'm filling the tank.
