When do I change the oil?

I'm coming up on the first oil change on the new (to me) 2009 Suburban. What do I believe ... the odometer which has 5000 miles since the last oil change, or the computer that says there's still 43% oil life yet?

Thanks,
Dave

  • The 2009 manual says 7500 miles unless in a dusty area and that's with dino not synthetic.
  • If you're using synthetic, I'd go another 2000 to 2500 miles. If using Dino oil, I'd change it now. My oil life indicator never seems to get below 20% by the time I change my oil. Changing the oil is probably the cheapest insurance for a long lasting engine.
  • Believe the monitor. Guys have done oil analysis and found the monitors to not only be accurate, but also conservative.
Modern EFI and ign systems just don't foul the oil like they used to.
