I'm a novice to the travel trailer forum but I will toss my measly 2 cents in.
I bought an 18 ft trailer with a weight of 2850 lbs empty or so it was written.
I traveled from Texas to California to pick it up, wanted to combine visiting friends and getting a solid trailer.
No issues coming from Ventura back into LA and getting on I-10 eastbound. I stopped for the night at the first rest area and enjoyed my first night in my trailer.
The next morning winds were strong and I noticed a bit of sway in the trailer but we were only going about 20 due to traffic. In Banning traffic opened up a little and I was up to about 40 when I felt the trailer move hard left (or Right, I just know it swayed) and then did the pendulum thing.
I went into a jackknife and just held on waiting for impact. The freeway was jammed but by whatever powers one believes in, no one hit me or visa-versa. I was pointing westbound in the east bound lanes blocking 3 lanes of traffic.
I got my truck restarted and finished the 360 onto the shoulder of the road.
Small dent on the trailer, big dent on my truck and I found out my pacemaker works.
My point is I would get the weight distribution hitch and anti sway. Small price to pay for peace of mind.
