I totally agree about a brake controller, but how would WD bars help in the case of another hitch ball failure? The bars on the typical WD hitch would just flop around if that happened again.
In the spirit of belt and suspenders thinking, the OP should probably look into suspension upgrades and tire replacement. 3,800 pound is a lot of weight.
