I needed a rig with 3000 lbs of free payload with my family of 6! When my four kids were adult sized teens, we 6 were in the 1200-1300 lbs between us. Add in a 650-700 lb hitch weight of a trailer with similar empty weight specs. A couple of Alaska malamutes with travel boxes IE 150 @ 200 lbs ea, typical contractor ladder rack, cross bed tool box, canoe on rack, gear for canoe, a bike or 6! Sometimes a 3500 watt generator. Firewood.....Am I missing anything?
I was using a 35 series SW with a 9200 factory gvwr. Usually loaded to 9500-9800 lbs. Below rear and front axle ratings. Diesel crew cab empty at time was 6600 lbs from GM.
Sooo, figure out how much you all weigh in next 5-10 years if you have younger kids, HW, other assorted odds and ends, a larger family as you and I have, may need a rig with more payload than a 25 series has, depending on options added. IE a diesel is 800-1200 lbs heavier than an equal gas rig. Full bore leather package is 600-800 lbs more than a work truck basic interior with no power windows etc.
The tale of the tape will tell you if a 25, sw 35, or even a dually may be needed.
YES your trailer is light enough to be towed by today's 1500's with V6 motors, if it was you and spouse, no adult sized teens etc etc...
