When to change oil

My truck (2016 Chevy diesel) gives me a percentage of oil usage left. At what percentage do you fellas normally change your oil? I normally will let mine get to around 12%-15%. Just curious if you change yours more frequently.

  • My F350 is used so little that the last time I changed it at 5000mi it had been over 2 years. Worries the dealer to death. It sits out there in the garage but I start it and let it run awhile every now and then.
  • 2011 Silverado 1500 2WD. I wait until the truck tells me it's time (7K+ miles). I do feel guilty sometimes. My old truck (2000 Z71) would get new oil/filter every 5K miles. My old daily driver (91 Camaro) would get changed every 3K miles.

It amazes me how far you can go with today's oil.....
  • Since my truck is new and under warranty, I change the oil when the truck tells me to. Some of it is trusting the engineers but it's mainly about not invalidating my warranty.

I usually reset the meter when it displays change oil soon … then the next time it comes up I change it if I still own the truck.

Back in the day, the saying was "Change your oil, or change your engine"
Has it evolved to Change your Truck?
I bought my 16 YO pickup new to replace a 20 YO pickup. Both of them came with a book that tells me when to change the oil

    This…
  • I have a 2005 Duramax as well. It only has 44,000 miles so if I waited for the dash indicator I would have some pretty old oil before I changed it. We have expensive engines, so $35 a year seems like cheap insurance. I change mine at the start of every camping season unless I make a cross country trip and really do a lot of miles.(8000 plus).
