The national forests out west generally let you boondock almost anywhere, as long as you are more than a mile or so from an established campground. And yes, with a properly equipped trailer, and some patience, and some careful scouting, and a good tow vehicle, and a topo map, and some helpful hints from a friendly ranger, and some luck, you can take your trailer into some of the darndest places. Not quite as versatile as a truck camper, but a little more comfortable.
