It depends how you look at it. For instance if you are traveling 60 miles per hour with 3.42 gears your truck will be able to run in 3rd, 4th, 5th or 6th. The engine would run at:
2900 in 3rd
2155 in 4th
1660 in 5th
1360 in 6th
With the 4.10 gears 3rd (3460 rpm)is not an option so:
2580 in 4th
1990 in 5th
1630 in 6th
So as you can see with the 3.42 gears your truck would be capable of putting more HP and torque to the rear axle at 60 mph than what it could if it had 4.10 gears.
