The other way to look at it which puts more stress on the drive components is as follows: Say you are cruising down the highway at 60 mph in 6th gear. The torque requirement is dictated by wind and rolling resistance and could be measured. With the 4.10 axle ratio that measured value could be divided by 4.1 to determine the torque on the driveshaft. The 3.42 axle would divide that axle torque by 3.42. These trucks are built to very stout and especially when the Ram engineers are saying to use 3.42 gears for trailers up to 20,000 lbs I have a very hard time understanding why people are arguing for a 4.10 ratio.
