When going down the road in high gear at 60 mph the 4.10 axle will allow the truck to run in 6th gear at 1630 rpm. If he gets the 3.42 rear axle and finds that he doesn't want the truck to run at 1360 rpm he can lock out 6th, have the truck drop to 5th and run at 1660 rpm. This way the power won't be sped up as much in the transmission only to be slowed more in the rear end. When he is touring around empty he can use his second overdrive. (my guess is he will use his second overdrive even when towing under many circumstances).
Very good point Terry, didn't think about the tow/haul button :S .
