I would try to get a handle on the difference in fuel mileage between the 3.42 and the 3.73 gears not towing or hauling. If there is no significant difference (most here say there would not be and I agree) then why not get the 3.73 axles especially if you plan to tow a lot in the mountains?
I initially assumed there will be a penalty in fuel economy since that's how it works for the 1500-series on gas engines. What I'm hearing is that there's almost no penalty for Diesels even when not towing.
Could someone confirm this please?
I can't say for certain in the Ram line up but the Fords get significantly better mileage the higher the speed the ratio.
