The white crust you guys are seeing are the ammonia crystals that show when the water part evaporates. Completely harmless. Dissolves once wet again.
Don't believe me? Pour a little def on a dark surface and let it dry. You'll get crystal formation pretty quickly.
LOL
Have you tried that test on your paint?
I wouldn't suggest it :W
I know the stuff is labeled corrosive. I've had a small stream of white crystal down the side of my truck occasionally when I accidentally over-filled. It doesn't rip the paint right off. Just took a wet cloth once I saw the stream and wiped it off. No damage. Bird droppings seem to be a bigger problem for me. - 45RicochetExplorer

IdaD said "you couldn't even buy a decent six pack of beer with your annual savings." man you must be drinking some high class beer. But four gallons at $7.50 = $30 and at $2.79 it's $11.16. That would be a $18.84 savings per fill up. So just how much is beer in Idaho? LOL
If you think you're saving a bunch of money then run the numbers.
I just bought a 2.5 gal of DEF at Wally World. $7.88 for a 2.5 gal jug. That's not a sale price, regular price. At your quoted price of $2.79/gal, which is also about the price locally at the pumps, you're paying $6.97 for 2.5 gal. So you're saving 91 cents for 2.5 gal or 36 cents/gal.
When I'm pulling my 5er and pulling hard I use about 1 gal for every 700 miles. If I'm running empty I use about 1 gal for every 1100 miles. So you're saving 36 cents a gal for every 700 to 1100 miles.
So what's your 36 cents/gal savings do for you?
Let's say you drive your truck 100,000 miles and the entire time only get 700 miles per gal of DEF. In that 100,000 miles you would use 143 gal of DEF and saved $51.48. If you drive that truck 200,000 miles you've saved a $100 bill and change.
Don't spend your big savings all in one place.- Perrysburg_DodgExplorerLOL if you want to buy the box than go for it, for me it's more covenant to drive five miles from the plant @ $2.79 (today @ Flying-J) or I could pay $7.50 per gallon at Auto Zone.

As for the white crystals Jus2shy addressed that, myself I have never seen this.

Your manual, and I assume this is true for the Powerstroke and Duramax as well, just calls for API certified DEF. Walmart Super Tech is API certified and runs a bit over $8 per 2.5 gallon jug, and I've used it without issues - it's more convenient for me than driving across town to get it at a pump. I don't see a reason to pay more for the name brand stuff - it probably comes from the same factory anyway.
Which is 1.75 to 2.00 higher than at a truck stop. Buying from a truck stop gets you the freshest Deffects and you only buy what you need to fill the tank.

But it also gets you the highest risk of contaminated DEF as well compared to a sealed container.
I've been running the API rated stuff in a container for almost 4 years and 92k miles without a single DEF issue.
I've been using truck stop DEF for over 3 years....never the first DEF issue, and at $2,55 - $2.65 a gallon, much cheaper than in the boxes....As stated, it stays fresh because so much is used and turn over in pump refills is fairly often...also, DEF is DEF..nothing more, nothing less.. - jus2shyExplorerThe white crust you guys are seeing are the ammonia crystals that show when the water part evaporates. The DEF pump nozzle at Seven Feathers RV lane in Oregon was so crusted up with white crud that I just hung it back up and stopped up the road at the next Wally World and got a Peak Blue box, just like the other 3 or 4 that I have used in 12K.
Same here, I've only filled up once at the pump and I had to wipe the nozzle off first. For no more than I buy I'll continue to buy it in a jug. - CramboExplorerThere is no way I would pay what they want for Mopar DEF. Its all the same. I have been using the brand that is sold at Tractor Supply called Terra Cair in my ram and haven't ever had an issue. It's 8 bucks for 2.5 gallons.
