Which is easier on the truck...TC or 5'vr

We are getting ready to buy either the TC or 5vr. I have had both. SO my question which is the easier on the truck..loaded to the max or even a little more with air bags and etc or a 5vr that only puts 1500lbs in the bed give or take a few??? We are considering a tc that will be 5800lbs loaded which is max for our dually. The 5vr would be using up no more than 1/2 of the pulling weight allowed for my truck.
  • I only can compare my several TCs to two TTs that weighed around 9500 pounds. TTs seemed harder on Trucks.
  • I think none of those should be hard on any dually build in last 10 years.
5800lb TC will take F450 or suspension reinforcement on F350.
I had several RVs in my life and choose TC as that was the cheapest RV (having truck for business already) I could have when we slow down our RV trips.
No other fees beside purchase price and keeping the water out.
Any other RV brings additional cost and headaches.
That said, we full-time in our TC for couple of months and neighbor invited us the her new 30' trailer.
The triple slide, with both rears open huge living room and kitchen with center island.
Not too many stick homes have such space.
Coming back to load on the engine- the biggest factor is always frontal area while weight at freeway driving plays small role.
My TC with basement and attic makes 13' high, so not that easy at 70 mph
  • I've had both and it seems to me that the 5th wheel made the truck work harder.

    DITTO.
  • The FW is easier on the trucks suspension however the TC will be easier on the drive train. However, with either, you can figure you will get over 100k miles out of the truck.

I've had both with the same truck and the TC finally won out because I'm still working so cover more miles than sitting hours. After retirement, we will make a couple of whirlwind trips exploring the entire USA making notes on what we want to go back to enjoy in depth. Then we will probably switch to a FW or TT behind the TC so we have more room when we go back to visit our favorite places more in-depth by staying longer.
  • FW is probably "easier on the truck" since the truck is carrying much less weight.
However, I don't go easy on my trucks. I don't abuse them but I do work them hard as they're designed to do. If a truck won't do what I ask of it then it gets repaired or sold.
