Which of these two trailers tows better

I understand there are many parameters but I am posting to see if something significant jumps out.

I have one of these trailers and the opportunity to trade for the other one. We love both flooplans for their own merit.

I am towing with a 2021 F150 Powerboost. Tow vehicle is fine with both.

I was just wondering what will tow better.

Without disclosing much, I am getting terrible mileage with one of them.

One is a Palomino Puma 26rbss
Other is a Vibe 28RL

Thanks for the insights.

  • I am getting 5-6mpg going west and 7-8 going east. Any head wind, will drop mpg to 6mpg. I am yet to see 9-10 even in Flats.

Yes, the hybrid is totally useless when towing. I learned this the hard way. I probably would have gone in a different direction if I had known this as well as the fact the tank is only 30g so range kind of sucks. I never expected mpgs to drop to 1/4 of regular driving when towing. My older trucks drop mpgs in half not this dramatic. The truck does have its appeal when not towing. It is just the ra ge that gets to me.

I usually drive 60-62mph. Easy on the gas pedal.

Do you have any recommendations on a good low profile trailer with similar floor plans to either? Most of what I have looked at seem to be 10ft 5in to 11ft 2 inches tall.

    Thank you
  • In terms of fuel economy, it's pretty much a wash. In terms of handling, I would expect the shorter TT to behave better due to less tail to wag the dog.
  • No doubt the Vibe is heavier, although that in itself is not the biggest issue as it pertains to towing comfort. The length (nearly 35') is more of a detriment for any 150/1500 series truck, definitely a handful at interstate speeds, particularly on windy days of travel, certainly the Puma would present less towing issues.

Obviously the more surface area a TT has the more it is affected by drag among other physics related forces, should use more gas to haul around, having a properly dialed in WD/SC hitch is paramount to attain a decent towing experience. I do like the rear living floorplan, really opens up the the interior living space.

Maybe you need to define "terrible mileage"?

    1 MPG?

    2 MPG?

    7 MPG?

    10 MPG?

Those are monster RVs they are TALL and they are HEAVY and I don't care if you have the most "fuel efficient" hybrid F150 ever built, once you connect any trailer to it, it will no longer get supposed 24 MPG..

Towing takes considerable amount of "energy", keeping that weight at speed takes considerable amount of energy and typically most NA gas engines will get 8 MPG-11 MPG towing..

Your "Hyrbid" is not exempted from this fact and you have now discovered this by accident..

Your driving "habits" may also be a contributing factor in towing mileage.

You cannot drive like you stole it and get good "economy" towing.

That means you no longer do jackrabbit starts, you EASE into the throttle and start rolling gently. Pretend you have a fresh laid egg between your foot and throttle and you don't want to mash that egg into oblivion..

Once you stomp on the throttle the mileage game is all over and now you are dumping more fuel into the engine than if you had a large NA engine.

You also cannot expect to drive 70+ MPH and get good mileage, you are dragging a 11ft high "billboard" behind you, both TTs you have selected are crazy tall.. Speed kills fuel economy, try speeds of 55MPH instead of 60MPH-70MPH..

You want better mileage, you need to select a lower profile trailer, something 9ft tall or a bit less will get better economy..
