The TV is where theory hit the cold light of reality. Unless you can afford a dedicated vehicle or drive very few miles, there is a significant difference in the cost and upkeep with 3/4 or 1 ton over a half-ton truck.
Everything that makes the bigger truck a better tow vehicle comes at cost. For example,
+ Towing capacity - bigger, stronger, heavier means less gas milage. While towing, mileage is a secondary concern, in day to day driving the difference between 18 to 20 mpg and 12 mpg adds up.
+ Tires, oil changes, shocks etc. are more robust, therefore cost more.
+ Initial cost is considerably higher.
+ While the interior and ride has improved over the years. It still "rides like a truck" when empty.
Unless it also doubles as your work vehicle, it is not the best choice for day to day use.
So what does this all mean? If you are going to pull the load, you have to pay the piper. If you are handy and have the time you came offset some of the cost.
Perhaps what gets lost in these discussions is the fact that for most folks, RVing is a hobby or a pleasant getaway; a part time activity. Do you need a yacht when a speedboat will do?
Each of use has to decide how much this hobby is worth and spend accordingly.
