I am still not through researching but a overhead camper mounted permanently on a 5500 can be registered as a RV. I am in California. I don't know the difficulty in accomplishing that or if what I have heard is true. I do know my brother had a 3500 registered as non commercial and used it to haul a fifth wheel. Not sure if it was registered as a RV or just not commercial. I'll have to ask him. It was never used as a commercial truck. He complained about having a hard time re registering it commercial before he sold it. Not sure why.
I guess the main thing I am not certain about is if there is a difference between a RV registration and a regular non commercial registration.
It is also my understanding that if the vehicle is registered as a RV. There is no requirement for a CDL.
