Bought my first Cummins back in 1991 and haven't looked back since. In twenty years, probably around 300,000 miles I believe..... I have been lucky, I guess, never had a problem with any water in the fuel system. Always carried a spare filter under the seat but never needed it. I always change them at 10,000 and sometimes 15,000 miles, they are cheap. I rarely, if ever, drain the fuel canister between filter changes as suggested by Cummins. One benefit of the older iron I have and have had, is that the older mechanical pumped engines don't really care about a little water now and then, they just pump it through and burn it. These new electronic diesels and their delicate and precise injection systems have a fit if they get any water at all.
