1998 3500SS Chevy. Not that unusual, except it has the 6.5 Detroit. Pulling a Chaparral 5vr. Has 268,000 on her. I have had to put two starters on since having it. Everyone told me to pass on truck due to Detroit. But it has been reliable. Does a good job pulling the 5vr.
I always thought the 6.2 and 6.5 liter Detroits were reliable. Didn't thy use the 6.5 Detroit Diesel in the military version of the Humvee for many years ?
I understand there are some in marine use.
The 6.5 had some issues with the injector, a crank sensor going out.....a number of us had motors that lasted about 110-130K miles, then they literally blew up. Mine was 105K just out of warranty. I seem to recall one starter on warranty a week after coming home. One alternator. I replaced all the injectors at 120K or so for maybe $500 on my own.....
BUT, even at that, at times I still wish I had it! I like the body style etc of those years better than my 05. Now we are into personal opinions. One can also for very little money, fix the issues with them, unlike the issues Ford caused with the navistar 6.0/6.4 motors. Altho at this point in time, ANY of the issues with all three of these motors are so well known, have excellent KNOWN fixes, that if one like to wrench, go for it. The 6.5 can be built up into the mid 200 to close to 300 hp fairly easy. 400hp is attainable with twin turbos from Penneinsular diesel in upstate Michigan at one time. Then again, they were doing the same hp setups with the old IHC IDI7.3 too!
as far as old, my oldest at this time is my 92 IHC with an idi 7.3 producing a whopping 175/335 hp torque spec, has 140K, still pulls upwards of 12K, loads to 14K, 26k total lbs.
Marty - pasusanExplorerIf we're going to talk about first ones, mine was a '65 Mustang Fastback.
- cpaulsenExplorerMy first one was a 93Chevy 2500 with 239,000. Current...01 F350/V-10/140,000.
- MvanderExplorer2000 new style yukon with 260000kms. Paid 3k for it 2yrs ago with 210000kms and the body is great. It became th tv this spring so I guess i got my 3k worth. Maybe another year if we dont get a bigger tt.
- BedlamModeratorI'm not sure about current specifications, the HMMWV started with a 6.2 normally aspirated diesel and then went to the 6.5 NA and turbo diesels. These were connected to either 3-speed or 4-speed Allison transmissions. Horsepower ranged from 150-205 and torque 275-450 lb-ft depending on the engine.

I thought I was in the minority with that high of a mileage TV which I meticulously maintain but I see some others have more and are still going strong I think I will try to squeeze another camp season out of it yet, with the price of pickups today I can keep saving for a newer one and not have a strong monthly payment.

Just getting ready to sell our '94 Mazda (think Ford Ranger). Bought it new as a holdover in early 1995. Sorry to see it go, but got a more suited, year 2000 3/4 ton replacement now.
Ours is black, with the graphics removed. 1994 Off-Road version, only 69k miles on it now. Never did a lot of towing, but did tow a 30 footer short distances at low speed. Truck weighed about 4000 pounds wet, the TT camper weighed about 7000.
The little truck EPA'd at 18 city, 22 highway but the best I ever got was 20 empty at 65 mph. It did get 18.6 all day long at 80 mph though. I never checked mileage while towing, but I expect it to to have been the usual 10-11 mpg at about 45 mph. A good match for it would have been one of the egg campers or a fold-down.
