Who makes the lightest 50 amp bunkhouse trailer?
Our friends want to tow a brand new travel trailer with their 2014 Toyota Tundra 4WD Platinum CrewMax which has a towing capacity of only 9k and maximum tongue weight of only 900 or less. They want 2 AC units, bunkhouse, 50 amps. What brand new travel trailer would YOU recommend?
Thank you for your help, with warm regards, James??
Max tongue weight of 900 lbs or less and two A/C units? I
Typically two A/C units are put on LONG trailers, like 30+ feet..
I think they will need to dial back their expectations, a lot.
9K with 900 lb tongue is only 10% tongue weight..
That is absolutely too light of tongue weight.
Tongue weight typically should range from 10% to 15%, aiming for 13%-15% results in a far more stable tow.
SOOOO.. 900 lb tongue weight at 15% gets you a trailer LOADED at a max of 6000 lbs!
They will need to be looking for a trailer with a empty weight of no more than 5,000 lbs..
So much for the supposed over rated "9000 lbs of towing" ratings..
Sorry.
Thank you for your post! They totally hear you! So what is the lightest smallest 50 amp travel trailer available? (even though they may need a new truck)
Unfortunately I don't know off hand.
Personally, 50A is not a real requirement as long as the trailer is on the smaller side and instead of two A/C units they may be able to simply go with a single 15K A/C.
13.5K A/C units are typically the standard size, and 15K units may be an optional upgrade.
I think they have things a bit backwards, go and look first, see what is out there, find something they like, then decide what A/C it needs..
I suspect, not a lot of bumper pull trailers will have 50A if they do, it will be very long, long, long ones, large 5vrs most likely will have the 50A option..
Over all, 30A/50A should not be a deal breaker and honestly, wrestling a 50A shore cord WILL wear them down in a hurry..
Also might even exclude them from some campgrounds which do not offer 50A connections unless they use a 30A to 50A adapter and that setup WILL drop them to one A/C unit.
