Who's towing with a colorado?

Im looking into a new truck to replace my 2006 silverado. The 2015+ colorado seems like a great candidate. I've looked at all the numbers and it seems to suit me well. towing the snowmobiles on a two place trailer isn't an issue, nor is my 3200lb boat. My wifes traverse(3.6 V6) tows the boat better than my Silverado. the GVRW on the Camper(2018 Zinger ZR18BR) is 4500lbs. just a little bit heavier than the boat. Im curious to hear real world experience from someone with a mid size truck. I've had full size trucks for the last 10 years so im a bit skeptical. Down sizing the daily driver just seems like its better for the wallet. Plus i can get more for my money buying a slightly smaller truck compared to a half ton.

    Something to consider:
you might need extra wide mirrors using a truck with less width.

Power wise : I did tow with the same HP rating but diff truck :
I towed 4 place flat front enclosed snomo trailers with similar HP and torque ratings and found hill climbs to be ok but I lacked that 'seat in the pants kick' when I tried to pass someone. It held 55-65 mph but lacked punch beyond that. I felt maxed out at those speeds where the full size diesel dually's were passing me at 75 mph. (uphill :) ) towing similar 4 place trailers.
I now tow about 6500# with a 5.3 full size GM gasser and feel like it has an easier job to do while passing with hill climbs at about the same . Therefore the 5.3 gasser feels like it has more power than the less HP diesel engine with the approx same torque.

What is your real rolling TW ? approx 600# ?
What is the payload of the truck with the diesel option ?
Now pack that truck as you would for a trip including passengers and equipment .
Will you be able to haul what you plan to bring ?
  • I have a crazy cousin that bought a Tacoma to pull his canned ham trailer. He sold it and bought a diesel Colorado and is very happy with it.
  • Hell yes I say!!
The Diesel option looks great !!
Great engine for highway towing I'd say. When towing you need to look a torque numbers not HP.
I may be going to that to... I wish I could just try it towing my trailer hehe
  • I've been VERY happily towing my 7K GVWR TT for 2 years and 14K miles with my 3.6L V6 GMC Canyon. With Tow/Haul and a properly setup WDH the truck passes up semi's and other F-150/Silverado's going up grade on interstate highways in the mountains with no overheating and no sway. When not hauling, it's smaller size makes it easier to maneuver in traffic, park close to the front door of Walmart, fits in my garage, and DW is not afraid to drive it. :) :) :) :)

I see Colorado’s pulling TT’s quite often during my daily commute.

I’d probably buy the diesel if I were to purchase one for towing.

Who's kidding? HP rating may not be impressive by your standards but torque rating is king when it comes to towing and the 2018 Colorado's 2.8L diesel is rated at a very respectable 369 @ a mere 2000 rpm. :B

  • Big difference between towing a boat and a TT. Already mentioned frontal area is another consideration some vehicles state this in the towing specifications of max area.
  • your biggest enemy with a TT is wind resistance not weight
we towed with a Dakota(24 ft, 4000 lb) fine until there's a headwind
the v6 just didn't have the guts
  • Isn’t the Colorado’s payload between 1,242 to 1,576? Wouldn’t your tongue weight be 700+ pounds including the WDH? Doesn’t leave much room for people and stuff.
