Well we rented a Mazda 3 in Ireland back in 2007, with a Turbo Diesel and got right at 40 MPG hauling around four adults. It also was not a slug, it got up and moved. That 40 mpg was with a heavy foot. Fuel at the time was euro 1.05 per liter, with about a 20% exchange rate about 4.88 a gal.BTW diesel in Ireland is currently euro 1.35 a liter.
