If Ford took their Transit Connect and gave it a more modern drivetrain (6 speed transmission, and either an Ecoboost or diesel engine) it would fit that bill. Not much to look at, but they have a 1600 pound payload and 27 mpg highway, using 10 year old drivetrain technology.
