It's fairly easy to exceed EPA estimates in a diesel given the EPA drive cycles. My Passat TDI is rated at 40mpg highway, and I have had 250 mile runs over 50mpg. Lifetime average is 38mpg in about 50/50 mix of aggressive driving. The intent of the linked trip was to minimize fuel use within a specific time frame. The vehicles had to average something like 62mph for the 48h test.
Anyway, I think the Ram 1500 diesel could average 25-27mpg in a 4WD crew cab and hit 32mpg on long highway runs at 70mph, with lots of power for towing when needed. When will Chrysler offer more than 1200 pounds of payload though?
