Finally got more of an answer to why all diesels are most efficient around 1,800 rpm. In comparison to what I thought, it has more to do with how diesel burns than other things like compression ratio...
Here's a video of a hot shot driver that did a test pulling a load at 65 mph vs 70 mph. It appears his 6.7 cummins with the aisin tranny doesn't like running at 65 mph with all the gear shifting probably caused his extra fuel consumption.
