Most fans are DC, if it is draining your battery and it is trying to recharge it may be that. Go to your battery compartment and see if the smell is stronger there. If it is you need a new battery.

This same thing happened to us and it was the battery going bad and venting horrible smells that I would have bet good money were sewer odors. Just like Wally Walleye (mmm mmmmm good eating, those walleyes!!) it got worse when I went to the battery compartment. I also bought and installed a new converter. Found the answers right on this forum.
