Why does having the furnace on produce a sewer smell ?

We're currently in Arizona. The temperatures drop down to the 30 Fs during the night. To conserve energy, we close the door to our bedroom and only have a small electric fan heater going at the 45 F l...

Battery is outside, so can't be that, but good point.
