One, ST tires are cheaper to make and generate higher profit margins. Not sure if that is true. But if is, that's a rational reason for the companies' behavior. (Maybe not a nice reason, but rational!)
My personal conspiracy theory about why Rvers like LTs is that they like to tow 80mph.
I agree with your speed theory completely. Way too many folks on the road towing at 70 and above. Setting aside the "tire issue" it remains that towing at speeds above 70 is inherently dangerous.
I'll wait for all the "enlightened" to tell me I don't know what I'm talking about that they are perfectly safe doing so......and they are - right up until the first time they aren't
If 5 MPH is the difference between safe and unsafe, then the rig is not safe at the lower speed either... They just haven't crashed.... yet.
I will submit that those that run 65 MPH speed limited tires are pushing the envelope worse at 60 MPH, the those running 99 MPH rated tires are at 70 MPH.
It is never a good idea to constantly run any equipment close to it's max.
