Perhaps I can shed some light on this topic.
First, you have to be very careful how and to whom you ask the question. It is the vehicle manufacturer who specifies what tires come on this vehicle and what pressures should be used. That is delineated by the vehicle tire placard. Some vehicle manufacturers do a good job of sizing the tires (and specifying the pressure) and some do not.
HOWEVER, a tire manufacturer is not in a position to argue the point. He doesn't have the resources to check each and every vehicle manufacturer's vehicles as there are literally hundreds of them. The best he can do it look for the obvious errors - and even then, he will talk to the vehicle manufacturer about it and not announce it to the public. (There are several examples of the opposite and they didn't turn out so well!)
So a tire manufacturer's general stance is to follow the vehicle manufacturer's specifcation - and if the vehicle manufacturer specifies an ST tire, the tire manufacturer will NOT say it is OK to use an LT tire in its place.
A tire manufacturer MAY say it is OK to use certain LT tires on trailers, but that is different than saying it is OK to replace an ST tire with one.
So what you're saying is that LT tire MFG's won't acknowledge that their tires are okay for trailer use because of liability reasons since they are bound to the sticker?
