I love these discussions.
1. Show me the data that proves total profits are higher from the lower volume ST tire than from the higher volume LT tires. Per tire yes. But if LTs replaced STs I suspect the tire maker's profits would be about the same.
2. More importantly, show me any DOT data that shows a higher failure rate for ST tires over LT tires.
3. Just because some STs are recommended for trailer use only, does not mean they are illegal for car use. Which auto maker specs STs for passenger car use? Which tire shops will install ST tires on any car?
It is after all, only a recommendation. That happens to be molded on the sidewall. Is the other info such as the maximum PSI also just a recommendation? Foolish perhaps because the stiffer sidewall resist turning and the tread is designed for towing. Again quote me the statute.
4. If you choose to believe it is all profit driven that is fine. Just forget about the liability side.
Capri Racer's post about cautious wording.
The way the tire makers work the system, they do not make ANY recomendations as to tire type. They leave that totally up to the Trailer manufacturers... No recommendation= no liability.
Corporations are great about this. Work for one for years with an excellent record and then quit on good terms... Your new prospective employer asks them about your record. All you will get is "He worked here." The same thing they will say about the poor employee they were glad to be rid of
They are trained not to say ANYTHING. No info given out, = no liability
So yes, it is all about money.
LT tires and ST tire will be with us for a long time. The choice is up to the individual.
Be safe.
