Capri, thanks for that insight!! I wish that there were a publicly- accessible online database (NHTSA, maybe?) that would tally the tire failure rate, broken down by tire type, speed, age of tire, ratio of vehicle load to tire load rating, etc. Analysis of that data would help us evaluate not only the tires but the validity of the regulations, with an eye toward amending them as needed.
But the problem with my dream database is that it depends on accurate input: many people will not report the event, people will fudge the truth about load and speed, etc. As they say in the data processing industry, "Garbage in, garbage out."
So I guess that we will have to continue to rely on anecdotal reports in order to make our tire-purchasing decisions.
