Seven pages and nobody had come up with anything except, "ST tires are no good" type of comments. What design deficiencies did they built into this type of tire? Why did they think the basic design was good for travel trailer applications? Was it just, "Build the cheapest tire possible"? Wouldn't a cheap common automobile tire have been even cheaper than coming up with a separate classification? Aren't ST tires "supposed" to be better at handling the twisting of tandem axles for instance. I am not a tire design engineer, but there must have been some thought that went into the ST type of tires??? Did they just glue some rubber together at the lowest cost possible? How do you know that?
Tom, you will notice I did not say ST tires are no good, in fact, that IS all I run on my TT and my 10K open flat bed trailer.
Cheapest, yeah right, has anyone REALLY priced ST tires?
Just put a new set on my 10K flat bed trailer this spring, those tires cost me a cool $800 mounted.. That is $200 PER TIRE.
Last LT tires I bought for my F250 were just UNDER $200 per tire with mounting and balancing..
My TT the last tire I bought for it was $180 with mounting..
Not sure where folks are finding these supposed cheaper ST tires but they sure are not cheap in my neck of the woods..
From what I understand from the tire manufacturers literature, ST tires are supposed to have additional UV stabilizers to reduce the breakdown of the rubber compounds and the sidewalls are built a bit heavier (this could be additional layers of "cords" rather than rubber) in order to handle the high sidewall stresses that happen during sharp turns.
I get it, folks just like to vent their frustrations and that makes it look like all ST tires are inferior to LTs on trailers.. But in reality, what typically happens is folks who HAVE had an issue tend to VENT their anger on online forums like this one..
Chances are that there are tens of thousands of folks who have NEVER had an issue and NEVER posted on this forum for ONE of each poster who has and has posted their problem here..
