TomG asked why I think that anecdotes are more accurate than tabular statistics. I don't, Tom! I wish there were good stats. But as far as I can tell, there aren't. So we have to fall back on anecdotes told by our fellow RVers. Not very scientific, but what else can we do?
This is where the net can give us more accurate input from not only this rv website but a dozen+ other rv websites. Now to gather more input from other trailer users (rv and non rv) check out the dozens of other types of trailering websites and you will get a better idea what brands/types of tires work better for a trailer position and what brands and types didn't work like the adds said they would.
The topic is tires used in a trailer position so any tire stats from car/truck/suv/vans is worthless.
There is no liability issue for a trailer owner to change to a different type of tire than is on the tire placard. Hell if a trailer came OEM with P tires I/you can change to a ST or LT. Same with a 1/2 ton truck that came OEM with P tire. I/you can change to a LT. Liability issues come under internet myth.
More insight on the subject.
ST vs LT tire testing per FMVSS
The topic would best be served if the question was 3 fold.
1. why do some trailer mfg use P tires ?
2. why do some trailer mfg use ST tires ?
3. why do some trailer mfg use LT tires ?
