At one time the Wrangler HT LT235/85-16 E were OEM on several brands of RV trailers. Just like HH II 5th wheel trailers came with Uniroyal HD-H LT 235/85-16 E about that time frame.
Trailers became heavier along about then requiring 6750-7000 lb axles so they were dropped in favor of higher load capacity tires (3500 lbs).
One of our horse trailers is a gooseneck with tandem 7K axles. One would think it might have a 14K or more GVWR. However, it came from the factory with LR E, 16" LT tires, which as you indirectly note, only have a 3100 pound rating. The trailer placard states a 12,400 pound GVWR.
Not that I would admit this, but I think maybe a time or two, we have been loaded beyond 12.4K. There is however about 3K on the pin, so were still likely under the tires rating. We've run Uniroyal Laredo LT's and it now has Firestone Transforce LT's on it.
The Laredo's lasted a long time and still had tread left, but were getting weather checked, so I changed them out for the new Firestones.
