Why no Tundra love on this site?

First off let me just say that I don't mean to start a flame war and though I really like my truck I am not necessarily a Toyota "fanboy". I bought the Tundra because I had great luck with 2 previous 4Runners and a Lexus IS-250, and I got a great deal on my 2013 because the 2014 redesigns were coming out. But with that being said, I think the Tundra's can stand toe to toe with any of the other 1/2 ton offerings (the F-150 2,000 lb. payload package excluded) on the market. I looked long and hard at a 2013 F-150 but I plan on keeping the truck at least 150,000 miles and I was a little hesitant about how the ecoboost would hold up over the long term. The Tundra 5.7 is a gas hog for sure but it is a reliable, tried and true engine. The Silverado's were about $5,000 more expensive than the Toyota's so I really didn't look too hard at them, especially since I couldn't really see them as an upgrade.

The only limiting factor on my Tundra is the 1375 lb payload limit, but it works for me and I have the heaviest truck they make (5.7 Crewmax 4x4). But anytime someone asks the question about what truck they should buy, you rarely read anything other than the "big 3".

Like I said, not trying to start a flame war as I don't really see the Tundra as head and shoulders above any of the others either. They all have good and bad.

  • We have a 2000 Tundra TRD 4x4 with the 4.7v8 and have used it mainly for towing our previous TT and our current TT and we can honestly say it has been an exceptionally reliable vehicle and we would not hesitate to consider another Tundra. Bare in mind that we have maintained our vehicle per the owners manual recommendations. May not have the payload capacity of the big 3 but it surely serves our needs. *** Go Tundra, you get our vote ***
  • Dad (RIP) had a Tundra as his last truck and liked it head and shoulders over the Rams and Chevy's he had. It was a little 'ol man's truck, payload didn't matter.
  • I love Toyotas and drove several different 4runners and small cars when I was younger. As the others say.... it's the lack of hauling capacity that keeps me from considering one. They look sharp and are likely very reliable. I just can't imagine laying out that kind of dough for a truck that has such a low payload.

And as for no Tundra love, you should have been a couple years ago. 3 out of 4 threads were somehow related to the Tundra.
  • Not only the very low payload spec limit but the well known wet noodle flexing frame that's under the Tundra. Any questions now as to why they have such a low payload capacity?
  • You got your lovers and haters. I would have bought one in a second if they made a 3/4 ton.
  • I traded in a 2013 Tundra DC 4x4 for my current TV. It is a very good TV for a 1/2 and I agree it can hang with any of the other 1/2's out there. I loved mine...

But it just didn't have enough payload for my needs. A family of four with a decent size travel trailer will run out of payload before reaching the max towing limits of the vehicle.

I know Toyota (and Nissan) are coming out with a Cummins. I hear both are still going to be 1/2 ton models though. That's unfortunate...I know a lot of people that would be interested in a 3/4 Toyota Cummins...I would that's for sure.
  • For me, payload took it out of consideration. A family of 4 that brings along the camper top/bikes/firewood/generator. Even the 500 extra pounds on my Ford was cutting it very close.

    Nice truck otherwise.
  • OK, I'll be the first to wave the flag :B...I love my '08 Tundra double cab 4X4, absolutely trouble-free, and no trouble or limitations towing our 6,000 dry, Keystone Outback 250RS, even through mountains.
Realistically, Toyota never really dented the home-grown market, for LOTS of reasons, but quality and capability in it's design range wasn't two of them.
  • I own a Toytoa Corolla. It's been an extremely reliable, fuel efficient car. I wouldn't hesitate to buy another one. So, I don't hate Toyotas.
However, I use a truck like a truck. I haul and tow things in all sorts of conditions. My present Chevy dually is over loaded with my current truck camper and boat. My next truck will hopefully be a Dodge 4500.
Until Toyota starts offering a "1 ton" or a dually or a diesel or a big block or a V10, or a cab and chassis, or something like that they're not on my list of trucks to buy.
Yes, I'm sure their "1/2 ton" is very nice. But, I'll never buy another 1/2 ton vehicle. Just not enough truck for anything I do with a truck.
  • I think you answered your own question
"The only limiting factor on my Tundra is the 1375 lb payload limit,"
DD and SIL have one, nice riding truck, but with the really high bed height, low load capacity and relatively small bed it just does not make for a really good towing platform.
