What taxes are marked to have the military deployed around the globe to keep oil flowing. Why does this continue when we import so little oil?
Because it was a false assumption that we keep the military around the to keep oil flowing. It was just propaganda used by certain people to pander to political sides. As you say, we import little oil now, but our military is still involved in these places so the assumption that it is for oil is invalid. Although it is kind of funny that a certain political party president can attack a region for a certain reason and not one word is said about lying or it being for oil. However, if the opposite political party did it less than five years later using the same exact reason, all of the sudden they are lying and doing it for oil.time2roll wrote:
What taxes are charged to clean up the oil spills and clean the air from petrol?
The companies that spill the oil are mainly the ones who are forced to pay for the clean up. As far as air goes, everyone who is buying a gas vehicle is paying for its better emissions when they buy it.
As far as cleaning the air goes, there are companies such as Carbon Engineering that have the backing of people like Bill Gates that are working to pull carbon from the air and make fuel out of it. They have stated that they could even pull more carbon than what is being put into the air by the fuel. However, they will need ICE vehicles around to buy the fuel so it can pay for the infrastructure. Without ICE, they would likely not have enough money to reverse the amount of carbon in the air. - HuntindogExplorer

Yes, they get rebates, often get cheaper plates(depends on state) do not pay highway use taxes, and get to use the carpool lanes anytime.time2roll wrote:

Because they are taxing me to fund a rebate for you to buy one...you want to buy one, fine...if the company survives, great...but when you make me pay for it, I get say.
BTW any tax credit to Tesla Buyers ENDS December 31, 2019.
The bottom line where the total tax is listed is where the hogs come to the trough.
Hopefully the rebates come to an end and then taxes are collected to fund the highways.
As usual, those at the trough do not see anything wrong with this.
It is real easy to be liberal with other peoples money.
Sure is, just ask the Defense Dept.
I only speakn English.
The defense dept. sees to it that I do not have to learn another language.
I like our defense dept. You should too. - Yosemite_Sam1Explorer

And our servicemen and women are paying for it in blood.
Let us also include the medical bills of those in the so-called cancer alleys (heavy traffic freeways). - What taxes are marked to have the military deployed around the globe to keep oil flowing. Why does this continue when we import so little oil?

This is one of the challenges that the Tesla semi and other BEV semis will have to face. Since their batteries are so heavy, they will have to carry less in order to stay within legal limits which means more vehicles(and more road degradation) to carry the same load a ICE semi could. Weight is one of the main reasons why fuel cell semi's are being taken more seriously in the heavy duty truck market than BEV's.
Many, if not most loads cube out before hit GVW restriction. And many of those loads move plant to plant/terminal to terminal. This is the place for E trucks.
Most folks don't understand that to register a truck for weights over 27 tons IIRC, the owner must pay a extra HVUT. Also, CMVs must keep track of miles driven in each state, the gallons of fuel bought/fuel tax paid. If enough fuel not bought in a state, mail money. It will not be the semis that get away from fuel taxes
As a person who has been in the medium/heavy duty industry for over two decades, I will say that most of this is false. - stsmarkExplorerThere was an article in the Semi thread a couple months back about the Hyundai future truck. The VP of Engineering made a statement regarding the Tesla Semi will be in violation of Fed bridge limits regarding weight versus wheelbase he said they forgot to allow for this. There was also a Euro reg regarding front overhang that apparently it and the Nikola are out of spec. So they can’t go into city areas.
Anybody else pick up on that? - NJRVerExplorer

Others beat me to it.
Even with the tax credit coming to an end (tesla is fighting to change and extend it)...in most areas, you pay no where near the fuel tax, which is intended to pay for the roads you drive on. There has been some move to increase registration fees but so far, it's not nearly as much as the gas tax collected.
So how much does a Tesla wear out and degrade the roads?
Seriously? Why would it be any different than any other vehicle the same weight?
Point being that most roads are designed for heavy truck traffic. The extra costs for building roads are due to truck traffic.
If it wasn't for the heavy truck traffic roads would last a lot longer.
So EV's and really any autos impact on road degradation is minimal.
The exception being maybe a local road in a housing subdivision that wasn't designed to carry massive weights to begin with.
That is why you will see posted weight limits on local roads. - LynnmorExplorerThere is more than weight that adds to the expense of operating roads. Signage, guardrails, signal lights, law enforcement, mowing, snow removal are a few. To allow some vehicles to not share the burden gets back to the politics of this subject.
