Wow, didn't expect THIS many responses! I'm glad to hear that there are a bunch of non-haters out there. It just seems like on a lot of sites, people are complaining about the sluggish, gas guzzling 6.0l. All I have to compare it to is my dad's old 7.4L and there is a night and day difference between my sub and his old sub. I feel that the 6.0l is a good compromise to the old big block so I always wondered why there seemed to be so many haters out there.
As far as diesel goes, I am selling my truck tomorrow (hopefully) and that will be the last of my diesel days. I have no choice but to tow with a gasser unless I follow through with my plan of having an LMM Duramax swapped into my suburban.
I think that the 6.0l is more than capable of towing all I need it to, I'm always curious about people who claim "it isn't much good over XXXXXlbs" or whatever they want to claim....
Now you are just trolling . But I'll bite. With pickups now, all engines can tow a ton. the limiting factor usually the suspension, gearing, etc. which is why a 1 ton has a higher tow rating than a 3/4 with same engine.
Definitely not trolling. I get on quite a few other forums and even on here it seems that a lot of people are quick to steer people AWAY from a 3/4 ton gas GM product and tell them they need a diesel. BUT, for example, my case, a GM diesel SUV doesn't exist in the newer vehicles and hasn't for a long time. The fullsize diesel van isn't the same as its HD counterpart and they don't fit my needs anyway (4wd). I have NO choice but to drive a gas fullsize 3/4 ton SUV to get what I need. I won't drive a Ford Excursion so that negates that option.
I'm just trying to find out why it seems like there are so many people that DON'T like them or don't feel that they are capable of towing significant loads. I'm glad that there are people that are HAPPY about their 6.0 and have come out of the wood works to say so! It honestly makes me feel better and more confident about what I'm going to be asking my Suburban to do in the near future.
From about 2005 and on, there's been a lot of technology going into diesels so they are the superior convocation for pulling. If you pulled your load with any newer diesel for a few hundred miles, then hooked the trailer up to your 6.0, you will agree the diesel is the better option. That doesn't mean the 6.0 isn't a good engine or can't pull the load. It's just that the drive for 10 hours through Montana is way less stressful with my current diesel.
The disadvantage to diesels are the up front cost, and the cost of maintenance. In your scenario with the suburban, my biggest concern would be the suspension, not the engine. It's amazing how the ride differs just based on the suspension.
So to answer the question, I think diesels are pushed more because they are the superior powertrain right now. Not that the 6.0 us a bad engine.
