Diesels are the only way to go.
Having said that, the reason the 6.0 "Don't get no respect" is that it is not something the automotive writers can get excited about. I think of it as a Rodney Dangerfield engine. Not the first one to the scene but will get you there and back again.
Unlike a diesel which will fill your ashtray with quarters and leave the Mustangs in the dust while getting over 20 mpg.
