Since you mentioned the Duramax, that would be a great choice. I know I loved mine. Of course, all of the three make a good diesel the last few years.
I'd note that since you are towing w/ an older 1/2 ton, there are some newer 1/2 tons that might do the job as well. I know my '10 Chevy half ton tows quite a bit better than my old one, due to a bit more HP and (more importantly) a great 6 spd transmission. And my 1/2 ton Ford Ecoboost surprises me every time I tow with it. Check the ratings on some of these newer trucks and your needs -- you might find something that works for you.
Just a though, as you may be able to find a 1/2 ton gasser cheaper than a diesel, and/or buy newer or w/ other options.
