Will the F150 Do the job?

We want to get a 2014 Forest River Hemisphere travel trailer that weighs 6,600 lbs. and we're looking at an F150 to pull it.

I found a 2007 Ford F150 5.4L V8 Triton with a towing package. I read online that it will tow a max of 9,500 lbs.

Will the truck handle this particular RV? I'm going to put a brake controller and weight dist. hitch on it also.

Thanks guys.

The trailer hitch weight is 540 lbs. plus 2 people (280 lbs.), WDH is 75 lbs. and about 200 lbs. of stuff in the truck = 1,195 lbs. The truck payload is 1,640 so I'm okay with that.

The dry weight of the trailer is 6,500 lbs. and I'm adding 1,000 lbs.

I suspect your tongue weight will be closer to 800 pounds to reduce sway, but you will still have a couple hundred pounds to spare. Just remember to always take out stuff you don't need and go light!
  • Thanks for all the great feedback.

(just saying 1K but it won't be that much) for stuff we'll be taking with us.

That depends. Did you read that towing max on the Ford or other reputable site? Is the payload enough to cover the tongue weight, your family, and any stuff you want to haul in the bed?
  • The truck will pull it, you need to be more concerned with the payload capacity. You will run out of payload with a 1/2 ton truck way before you reach the tow limit.

Is the tt 6600lbs dry or loaded? 6600lbs dry will be 8k+ once you load it up with options and gear and have a tongue weight pushing 1000lbs. After deducting the tongue and hitch weight from the payload rating will you have enough left over for the family?
  • That truck will do the job, but if you are looking for a truck anyway, a heavier duty truck would work better. The trailer loaded, and gear/people in truck will be closing in on max capacity.

If you are set on that truck, and only using it to tow that trailer part time, it will get you by IMO.

  • As long as you are within all your ratings, you should have no problem. Pay attention to your payload capacity (yellow door sticker) and hitch weight. Don' be afraid to let the 5.4 rev. That's where it makes it power.
  • If you are putting on an equalizer hitch and brakes, I see no reason why the 150 with a Triton motor should be any problem. Have Fun and Happy Camping.
