Will the new Ram 1500 diesel need an exhaust brake?

I have zero towing or hauling experience with a diesel engine and just wondered how important that kind of feature might be with this new 3 liter wonder.

  • If you tow in the mountains, an exhaust brake is really nice to have. I would hope the 1500 comes with one.
  • Yes, get an exhaust brake, a tuner, EGR/DPF delete kits and maybe a water/methanol injector too. Replace the stock air intake with an aftermarket, also the exhaust tubing diamater will need to be increased. Eventually you will want to replace the injectors with high flow versions, lift pumps with higher volume version and the turbo with more turbo... Welcome to the world of diesels, are the 1500 3.0 diesels available now?
  • In the global market, small diesels don't usually have exhaust brakes, even where 2.4 to 3.0 engines are used to haul 20 ton loads. But ratings are usually lower than what Ram is advertising, and North American truck uses and driving styles tend to be different, particularly speeds. Exhaust brake or not would be a moot point if one was not offered. More recent technology brings the turbocharger into the braking process, putting a throttle in the exhaust of older pickup truck diesel engines was a sort of band-aid approach to dealing with the lack of intake stroke braking in throttle-less engines.
  • I'll jump on the pile in agreement; EBs are sure nice to have but not an absolutely necessity for RVers, as Turtle and path1 have attested to from personal experience.

If you really would like one, I'd bet the aftermarket will be quick to response with a compatible EB if it isn't a factory option.
  • I can tell you the EB in my 2012 Dmax kicks ars. There are times I barely have to touch the brakes when coming to a light or intersection. I don't think I would ever buy another diesel without one after having had one.
  • Your sig line has your in North Idaho. So as an example, I've gone down Lewiston grade many, many times maxed out no problem?
  • Need? Not IMHO. Would it be nice? Sure!

I have a 6.5 diesel with an auto and hauled a gross of around 15K up and down the Rockies and all over Co with no problems at all. Never hit the brakes much at all. Brakes lasted well over 100K.
  • I have one on my 3500, not sure if you'll have enough weight behind you to need one.
