Many many people are pulling very large trailers with 1/2 tons, too large IMHO but Ford, mainly, says they can do it.
If all you are doing is pulling a trailer with an empty bed that's one thing, but if you take bikes, quad, a dog, or anything in the bed that has some weight to it you run out of capacity very quickly.
Location has a lot to do with it as well. What many people do out Midwest or east I would never do in the PNW.
