Winter project

So I winterized last weekend because winter came early here in SW Ohio. Now to keep me sane till Spring I am thinking of projects for my TT. I want to rig up an on/off switch for my battery (I have to disconnect after each trip) and make an easy access lid for the battery box to hook up the solar maintainer I have. Has anyone done this? Any pics? Sorry if this post seems corny, I need camper talk to keep me from curling up in the fetal position and ticking off my wife. Any other project ideas??

I pull everything out of my camper during the winter and sort through it. Anything that hasn't been used gets left at home in the shed. Then I clean and repack what I need for next year.

Keeps me from accumulating too much junk , and weight, that I don't need .
  • Thanks everyone! Barney, that's exactly what I had in mind! I only have one battery so I'll look for a smaller box.
  • I have my two batteries in an aluminum battery box by Torklift. I added a switch like you describe.
It is a Blue Sea on/off switch that I purchased at the local West Marine store. I have two group 27 batteries in there.

I have since added a solar charger to the top of the box so the battery will stay charged when we leave the trailer in the woods for the summer.
Here is what it looks like.

  • Same problem. Gotta keep busy over the winter. Just finished converting a storage space by the door to a clothes hamper and added a hatch to make another outside storage space above the water heater. Am in the middle of changing 36" of hanging clothes wardrobe in the head to 6 drawers and 12" of hanging space. A stereo upgrade is also in the future.
    Previous projects were
Adding counter space in the galley
    Butcher block top for stove
    TV mount
    Making a hidey hole
    Wine and beer storage
Fiddles on all counters except galley
Separating the long over bed cabinet into 3 compartments
    All LED lighting
Outside table that attaches to camper with adjustable legs (from paint roller handles)
    Fantastic Fan

There's more. Hope this gives you some ideas for your sanity.
  • Do you have enough shoe racks for all of the family's shoes?
I just finished replacing all of my Stabilizers to the kind that requires fewer turns to raise and lower them. It was a fairly big job because I also had JT Strongarm's installed and had to replace a few rusty parts after about 5 years.

I too use the BLUE SEA battery switches... Mine is the four position version to what is shown above. I have two battery battery banks here and with the four position I can switch to BAT BANK1 - BAT BANK2 - BOTH or OFF. Lets me select which battery I am using and can also switch one battery out while the other one is still working which is helpful sometimes when working on the things...

in the OFF POSITION both batteries are disconnected...

BLUE SEA BATTERY SWITCHES are available from AMAZON

  • We are planning our trip west next spring and looking at what we want to see on the way. Not corny, just survival - part of the journey
  • Corny nothing!
For many of us this is the only thing that gets us through the long winters!

Looking forward to seeing the responses. (preferably long ones with pictures...)
  • This is what I installed this season to disconnect the battery. Mounted it to the inside of the A frame near the battery, or you could mount it directly to the battery case. disconnect
