Been winterizing with pink since 2006 and wouldn't ever use just air as there'll always still be small amounts of water trapped in valves, fittings, etc - pink is designed to displace this water. At times temps here in S Ontario can drop to -25C during the winter and pink has never failed me, never caused any issues, and I've never have had to replace anything because of freeze damage. I don't "drain" the system per se in the spring but during the course of purging the system of air and filling it with water any pink by definition is removed - no biggie at all. Your choice, but pink works just fine for me. :B
That said, this has nothing to do with the OP's original question - which was camping during cold fall weather. IMO, no need to winterize at all until temps consistently sit well below freezing, otherwise just go camping and don't worry about it. :)
