Wireless proportional brake controllers

I'm seeing these wireless brake controllers on the market, are they any good, and are they reliable? Any input would be helpful.
Thanks
Steve
  • Some TV's can't have a traditionally brake controller installed. Something like he BMW X5 or something like that. The Prodigy RF is one of the only controllers you can use.

    Thanks!

I assume that the TV has to have a standard 4 or 7 pin outlet for the trailer turn signals/brakes/etc. so it would have to be plugged into theTV so what does the wireless unit do? sandwich it between TV and trailer plug?

I got a Tekonsha primus IQ and when I had troubles finding that plug under the dash on my tacoma I almost resorted to shipping it back and getting their wireless one. plug one part into trailer, hook other part up to 12 volt outlet and no umbilical, etc. easily switch between TVs. and/or rvs.
I don't fear wireless that much. in fact most of my televisions are operated with wireless equipment. don't have a kid underfoot to yell at to change channel to XXX. like the good old days.

I am using the Prodigy RF. I like technology and figured why not. It took about 5 minutes to install and setup, and when I am not towing I can put the remote away. The good part is that it will still work without the remote. The unit that installs on the trailer remembers your last settings, and will use them in the event of the remote losing connection or power.

It works great and I notice no difference between this controller and the regular wired Prodigy's I have had in the past.

I'm running a P3 now only because at the time I was wanting to upgrade from an older Prodigy my dealer offered me a P3 he had received from the distributor as demo and offered it to me at a price I couldn't refuse. Had I not been in the right place at the right time I'd probably also now be running a Prodigy RF so it's great to hear how well it does work. Thanks for your report :B ... far better than just WAG speculation from others who've never owned one and have no solid basis to support their negative opinions. :R

  • I've been using a variety of Tekonsha brake controllers for years, my current being a P3, but I'd have no hesitation at all to use a Tekonsha Prodigy RF if I otherwise had a need, the only downside I see being the cost of the system.

  • It is a fancy solution for those that have multiple things to tow. Unfortunately, a user must still make connections between the TV brakes and the trailer's brakes. If that isn't in an umbilical, it is to controller or receiver.
